About Doulas Supporting Teens

Despite small declines in teenage pregnancy in the last few years, over 200 girls 19 and under become pregnant in Lane County each year. Culturally, economically and medically these young women enter this most profound physical and emotional experience at the most inopportune times developmentally, economically and socially. For a staggering number of these young mothers, and their children, cycles of poverty, abuse and neglect will ensue. Social stigmas and cold economics leave far too many teen parents to navigate this time alone, isolated and unprepared.

This is the crisis that Doulas Supporting Teens (DST) was created to address.

In the broadest sense of the role, a doula is a community health worker who provides skilled and intimate continuity of care throughout the child bearing years.

Simply, a DST doula is a specially trained and experienced home visitor who offers a young mother a strong, caring and trusting relationship with a knowledgeable adult.

These hightly trained women fill the growing gaps in services for pregnant and parenting teens due to local and state budget cuts to the health and human services sector. DST provides this public service free of charge to those 19 and under.

Founded in 2003, DST’s mission is to support and educate pregnant and parenting teens about bringing healthy babies into the stable families that build strong communities.
